Allen Landscape - innovative ideas that become beautiful landscapes!

We have a licensed Landscape Architect on staff, as well as a Landscape
Designer, to create your custom design. Our designers have over 45 years
combined experience in creating successful landscapes for homeowners and
businesses throughout the area.

Our Landscape Architect or Designer will meet with you, on your property, to develop ideas
for your specific area. After determining your goals, our designers will present you with a
rough sketch of their design, which is yours to keep. This consultation costs $45, and is
payable at the time of the consultation. Master planning, or whole-site design, services are
available as well. Please discuss master planning fees with our Landscape Architect or
Designer.

Doug Werner
Landscape Architect, IAH Master
For the past 29 years Doug has been contributing to the
'greening' of Northwest Indiana. He has worked at
hundreds of residential sites (literally) and many of the
local hospitals and dozens of commercial sites. Doug's
ideas allow him to create outdoor living spaces that
address the practical needs of his clients but tailored to
the clients' own personal style. He specializes in
combining plantings with patios, walkways and fire pits
to create "outdoor rooms." Doug received his degree in
Landscape Architecture from Purdue University.

In his spare time, Doug tends his own gardens, trying
out new ideas for his clients. When not in his garden, he
is spending time with his family or pursuing his
enthusiasm for trains.

Landscape Crew
Our foremen are Indiana Accredited Horticulturists (IAH)
and licensed by the state of Indiana for pesticide
applications. The crew members are experienced
craftsman equally skilled in creating personal and
customized residential landscapes, along with
constructing landscapes at commercial and heavy
industrial sites. There is a commitment to staying current
with construction techniques, horticultural practices and
maintaining a safe job site. They take pride in their work
and treat your project as if it were their own home.

Some of our Projects
  • Prevent soil compaction.  Avoid walking across water saturated lawns/beds and
    tilling flower beds.
  • Prune dead, broken, crossed/rubbing branches.
  • Prune summer blooming shrubs now (including roses and Rose of Sharon.  Spirea
and potentilla may be pruned down to 6”-8” tall.  Hydrangea may be pruned back to
    live wood.
  • Do not prune spring blooming trees and shrubs at this time – the flower buds will be
    removed.
  • After the last frost (usually after Mother’s Day) it is safe to plant vegetables and
    annual flowers.
  • Deadhead spent blooms and remove the stems from tulips and daffodils (spring
bloomers) as necessary.  Don’t braid or tie the leaves together.  The leaves remain
until they turn brown (sometimes not until June).

Lawn maintenance for March/April/May

  • Remove litter from your lawn.
  • Overseed lawn as needed, starting the last 2 weeks of March.  The seed will lay
dormant until mid-April when it germinates.  If you overseed in the spring, do not
    apply a pre-emergent herbicide.
  • In April Aerate lawn - do not power rake.
  • Apply pre-emergent crabgrass herbicide when the forsythia shrubs (yellow flowers)
are blooming (usually mid-April).  If you have a severe crab grass problem, apply a
post-emergent herbicide in late-May to early-June.  If you have overseeded your
lawn do not apply a pre-emergent herbicide.
  • Begin mowing when needed.
  • Fertilize with 18-5-9 mid-May through mid-June.
